Unchained Melody
A seascape of movement and love songs. In Unchained Melody, Mette Ingvartsen uses love songs from different eras as a musical anchor for the choreography. The movement follows the logic of water: ripples spread between the dancers, undercurrents draw them in new directions or into a swirl before calm returns and the surface settles. The dancers sing as they move, and this puts the breath into play: the voice shifts, the tone breaks. The Danish choreographer works deliberately with strong emotions, and in the meeting point of song and dance, the performers navigate an ever-changing emotional seascape. For Ingvartsen, love is more than a feeling; it is a social and political force that can erode what is hard or loosen what once seemed fixed. Unchained Melody is a performance in which song and movement flow into one another like waves on the sea. Carte Blanche is the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance. Based in Bergen, the ensemble tours worldwide. Unchained Melody also has a family friendly performance Saturday 30 May where audiences of all ages are welcome. Mari Boine
A powerful voice from Sápmi. Mari Boine is a cultural icon. Ever since the albums Jaskatvuođa maŋŋá in 1985 and Gula Gula in 1989, she has been an important voice for Sámi culture. The songs in her native language have resonated internationally, and Boine has experimented with genre-blending and various artist collaborations – such as with Peter Gabriel, and with Jan Garbarek – throughout her career. – My songs describe the pain of oppression and the struggle to reclaim self-respect, but I also sing about the joy of growing up within a culture that has such a close bond with nature, says Boine. In recent years, Boine has been rediscovered by new audiences following her participation in the Norwegian TV show Hver gang vi møtes, where she interpreted songs by Norwegian musicians in Vamp, Highasakite and Matoma with her powerful voice and strong stage presence. The newspaper VG wrote: ‘Mari Boine is one of our leading musical alchemists, with enviable control.’ On the 2024 album Alva, Boine confronted her strict, religious upbringing. Critics expressed that the tone and message seemed closer to the well-known songs from the beginning of her career. In Håkonshallen during the Bergen International Festival, the trio will perform from Mari Boine’s extensive catalogue. Image: Mari Boine. Photo: Per Heimly - PrenotaBergen22.05.2026 - 21.05.2026

17th May - Norwegian Constitution Day
A unique feature in Bergen is the city's many traditional and special "Buekorps" - the traditional drummer brigades. In addition to the Norwegian flags, people typically wear red, white and blue ribbons. Norwegians wear traditional outfits, called bunad. The graduating class from the Norwegian equivalent of high school - known as russ - is also a big part of the celebrations. You'll see them wearing special red or blu overalls and generally being a lively addition to the parades and festivities. The Morning parade: Starts at Dreggen at 07:00 The first parade takes place already at 7:00 from Dreggen, with a salute, our national anthem and of course the Bergen song. The Morning parade ends with a speech at the Festival Square. The main parade: Departure from Koengen approx at 10:30 As the name says, the main parade is one of the biggest events on 17th of May. It involves the city's "associations, corporations and government agencies." The parade ends at Festplassen Square. The Flag parade: Starts at the Festplassen Square at 10:40 The Flag parade starts from different schools and march to the gathering at Festival Square. The route goes through the center and pass the main parade and ends at Torgalmenningen. The Flag parade is the children's parade! The parade ends at Koengen. Fireworks round off the day at Festplassen at 23:15 Please note that the whole city center will be closed for ordinary traffic during the celebrations and public transport will have special routes and stops. The Bergen Light Rail to and from the airport will not stop at the two last stops in the city center (Nonneseter and Byparken) in the morning until 15:00 in the afternoon. Bergen Buss station is then the last stop in the city center. If you are going from the city center to the airport on the 17th May, we recommend you plan your means of transport well in advance. - PrenotaBergen22.05.2026 - 23.05.2026

Dirigentmesterklasse m/Esa-Pekka Salonen
Turangalîla – a modern masterpiece of joy and love. The New York Times describes Esa-Pekka Salonen as a conductor at the pinnacle of his career, capable of doing anything, anywhere. Now, he comes to Bergen to conduct the Festival’s opening concert, featuring Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. ‘Esa-Pekka Salonen has been a superstar on the classical music scene for decades, with a deep and lasting influence as both composer and conductor,’ says Festival Director Lars Petter Hagen. Salonen is celebrated for his profound musical insight and for bringing out the very best in the orchestras he collaborates with, including the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony. ‘He is passionately committed to classical music’s role in society - how it can evolve, be renewed, and reach new audiences. A thinker, a visionary and a musical powerhouse of our time,’ Hagen adds. Salonen has lived with Turangalîla since he first encountered it as a child in Finland. The French composer Olivier Messiaen composed the work in 1948 as a tribute to life, joy, and love, drawing inspiration from the medieval tale of Tristan and Isolde. The title Turangalîla is a blend of Sanskrit words: Lîla means both play and love, but also suggests a sense of divine intervention in the universe. Turanga stands for movement and rhythm, but also the passage of time. Messiaen wrote that Turangalîla means everything at once: a love song, a hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death. The colours, textures, rhythms, melodies and surprises of Turangalîla unfold with every phrase. Across ten movements, the piece breaks many of the conventions typically associated with the symphonic form. The concert features two solo instruments: the piano, and the distinctive ondes Martenot, an early electronic keyboard instrument invented in 1928. More than 100 musicians will take to the stage for this spectacular musical experience. Image on top: Esa-Pekka Salonen. Photo: Mika Ranta - Bergen28.05.2026 - 05.06.2026
Night Jazz
Nattjazz (Nightjazz) is the longest jazz festival in Northern Europe and is arranged annually in late May / early June in Bergen. Nattjazz was founded in 1972 and is despite its age, now stronger than ever. Every year approximately 80 concerts are presented throughout the festival period. The main festival area is an old sardine factory, USF Verftet (United Sardines Factory), which now contains several concert venues plus exhibitions, theatre, cinema and artist studios. The music profile of Nattjazz spans through a wide range of styles, with a main focus on modern jazz. During Nattjazz the borderlines between jazz, rock, ethno and electronica are explored and often wiped out. The children also get their share! - PrenotaBergen07.05.2026
BRITT-SYNNØVE JOHANSEN
- Remember to book a table for the best experience One of Norway’s most beautiful voices is out with a new album. Now Britt-Synnøve Johansen comes to Visebasaren. Kveldslys — taste the word: evening light. The day fades, darkness falls, but there is still light — warm, soft, and gentle. Britt-Synnøve Johansen is the petite woman with the powerful voice and a rare gift for emotional expression. She has sung Édith Piaf in Norwegian, tango in Norwegian, and performed her own and others’ songs filled with deep emotion. On her new release Kveldslys, the mood is calmer; the lyrics are mature, wistful, and reflective. Yet it remains warm — and endlessly beautiful. Like an evening bathed in soft light. Kveldslys was recorded live with highly skilled and dedicated musicians. The result is a tender, intimate, and honest album. Musically, it belongs in the Norwegian folk song tradition but also reaches toward French chanson, jazz, and Americana — all at once. Britt-Synnøve is known for captivating her audience, and with Kveldslys she is once again ready to share songs and stories that everyone can relate to. Joining her this evening is her absolute favorite pianist, Rasmus Solem. - PrenotaBergen09.05.2026 - 10.05.2026
ZERO BATS & Faceshopping + supp: Darkdome
ZERO BATS & Faceshopping + supp: Darkdome || Hulen CC: NOK 200 / NOK 250 ID: 18 ZERO BATS ZERO BATS are a no-wave / synthpunk duo from Oslo, Norway, creating experimental gothic music. Inspired by bands such as Suicide, Bauhaus and My Bloody Valentine, ZERO BATS merge the sound of 1980s and 1990s post-punk and shoegaze with modern alternative and club music. Cyclical synthesizers, noisy guitar riffs and confrontational lyrics are combined to create a dark, intense and psychedelic soundscape. With their energy and strong stage presence, ZERO BATS transform the concert venue into a dance floor. “... ZERO BATS take over the stage, and the Oslo duo deliver just over an hour of genre-defying darkwave synth goth punk. They have the confidence to completely fill the stripped-down stage. ... Fat sound, distinctive songwriting – we believe in their future.” Photo feature: There is hope for Norwegian alternative rock, Puls Magasin, 17 January 2025 FACESHOPPING Unfiltered alternative rock straight from Oslo’s underground. The Oslo-based Faceshopping has quickly become one of the most talked-about names in the city’s alternative scene. With the noisy chaos of Sonic Youth, the glitchy experimentation of Machine Girl, and Radiohead’s melodic sensibility, they deliver a rare blend of 1990s nostalgia and modern energy. DARKDOME Out from the dim caverns of Bergen emerges Darkdome. A brand new DJ collective formed out of Hulen’s gothic DJ event Grottegoth, Darkdome seeks to create a safe haven with the mystifying sounds of post-punk, goth rock and darkwave. Come for the music. Stay for the mystique. Darkdome invites you to embrace the night. - PrenotaBergen09.05.2026
IMAGINARY WINGS - BEATLES ETTER BEATLES
When The Beatles split up in the early 1970s, four musical giants took four different paths – leaving behind an enormous catalogue of songs that far too rarely get to live on stage. – Remember to reserve a table for the best experience George Harrison gave us the monumental All Things Must Pass. John Lennon went raw and uncompromising, from Plastic Ono Band to Imagine. Ringo Starr delivered hits and groove. Paul McCartney formed Wings – and took the world by storm live. Imaginary Wings was founded to breathe new life into this music. Not as nostalgic background, but as living, sweaty and instantly recognisable rock, pop and soul from the solo careers of four of the greatest songwriters in history. The band had a brilliant debut during the Beatles Festival in Bergen 2025, with a focus on McCartney/Wings. At Madam Felle, things are turned up a notch: This evening, you get all four. Expect classics such as Band On The Run, My Sweet Lord, Imagine – and many more – performed with joy, respect and authority by musicians with long experience from the Bergen music scene. This is Beatles – after The Beatles. And it hits harder than you think. In the band: Helge Haugland – vocals, bass, piano, guitar Tor Erik Solem – guitar, bass, vocals Erik Rolland – guitar, vocals Kim Gulbrandsen – keyboards, vocals Einar Olsson – drums
