    BRASILS HJERTE - 12/8 KL. 20:30

Sentralstasjonen in Rio de Janeiro holds a multitude of fates on their way to, from or through the city. Here is the story of one of these. The moving breakthrough film by the director behind The Motorcycle Diaries (2004). In the sea of people at Rio de Janeiro's central station two people meet, an older retired teacher who makes a living helping people and a 9 year old boy who has not seen his father in many years. Together they set out on a road trip to find the father, and a unique friendship develops along the way. The film won both the Oscar for Best Foreign Film and the Golden Bear in Berlin in 1998. Central Station represents the new wave of Brazilian films at the end of the 90s, and is often described as a continuation of the social realist legacy in Brazilian film. It also achieved something the golden age Cinema Novo films of the 60s never did: reaching a wide audience both nationally and internationally. High On Fire

The metal legends High on Fire come to USF Verftet Tickets on sale from Wednesday 4 February at 11.00. No mercy, no filter: High on Fire come to Bergen on 18 August. When they take over USF Verftet, the stage is set for an evening of uncompromising metal and raw power of a rare caliber. The band from Oakland, with Matt Pike at the helm, is known for heavy riffs, raw energy and an expression that has always gone its own way – far from the polished and predictable. In 2019, High on Fire were awarded a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the album Electric Messiah, securing their well-deserved place among metal’s biggest names. The award brought increased attention to the band, without changing what has always defined them: an uncompromising musical expression and complete dedication to their own style. With drummer Coady Willis on board, High on Fire have further developed their sound, something that is clearly evident on their latest album Cometh the Storm. The record appears as both a continuation and a renewal of the band’s core: brutal heaviness, driving tempo and a dark, almost apocalyptic atmosphere. On stage, High on Fire are an experience – a massive wall of riffs, pounding drums and an intense presence that hits you right in the gut. This is sweaty, loud and uncompromising metal craftsmanship delivered by a band that lives for the moment on stage. When the lights go down at USF Verftet on 18 August at 20.00, only one thing matters: pure, unfiltered power. Secure your ticket, and be there when High on Fire set Bergen ablaze.

Saphir Quartet & Ossi Tanner: Mozart & Sibelius

    - An unknown masterpiece is resurrected. When Sibelius was 24 years old and a student in Berlin, he wrote his only piano quintet - a five-movement work with almost orchestral power. At the world premiere in Helsinki in 1890, Ferruccio Busoni himself sat at the grand piano, with Norwegian Johan Halvorsen on violin - he who a few years later would lead Harmonien here in Bergen. Sibelius himself never heard the work in its entirety: it was not performed in its entirety until the centenary of his birth in 1965. Mozart's Divertimento in F major for string quartet is also a work of his youth: the composer was only 16 years old when he wrote his three so-called Salzburg divertimenti in the winter of 1772. In Håkonshallen, these two works of his youth are framed by Sibelius's beautiful and subtle piano cycle The Trees, op. 75 and the wistful, but very popular Valse triste. In other words, this evening will be a celebration of young creativity - with a bunch of the Nordic region's leading young musicians on stage The award-winning Saphir Quartet meets the Finnish pianist Ossi Tanner, proclaimed "romantic virtuoso" by Helsingin Sanomat. After many years of absence and countless questions it is finally confirmed: Otis Gibbs returns and on 25 August he comes to Lille Ole Bull. The singer and songwriter from Wanamaker, Indiana, has long had a dedicated audience at home, and the reunion has been missed. Otis Gibbs is far more than a traditional songwriter. In addition to the music he has found success as a visual artist, podcast host and programme creator. The podcast Thanks For Giving A Damn quickly became a favourite and led further to the Pandora series Country Built, which today reaches millions of listeners. He has also built up a strong presence on YouTube. Musically Otis Gibbs is rooted in the American storytelling tradition, with roots in artists such as Woody Guthrie, Joe Hill and Bruce Springsteen. He sings about people and stories from a working, unfinished America – seen from a consistent underdog perspective. His lyrics are about work, travel, longing and the realities of life, conveyed with honesty and warmth. With a dozen albums behind him, and the critically acclaimed release The Trust of Crows as his latest, Otis Gibbs is a rare and authentic voice. • Ståle Kleiberg i samtale om Debussys musikk og poesi
    Bergen
    22.08.2026

Ståle Kleiberg i samtale om Debussys musikk og poesi

About the conversation (The conversation will be held in Norwegian) In this conversation with composer and professor emeritus Ståle Kleiberg, we take a closer look at how French Symbolist poetry can serve as a gateway to understanding Debussy’s music. Debussy set to music many poems by the leading poets of his time, such as Stéphane Mallarmé, Charles Baudelaire, and Paul Verlaine. In these songs, poetry and music are closely intertwined. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Debussy does not use music to describe the literal content of the poetry. The aim is not to realistically “depict,” for example, a forest. In Debussy’s own words, the mysteries of the forest cannot be revealed by measuring the height of the trees. Rather than portraying the forest itself in his music, Debussy uses musical symbols to convey a person’s response to being in the forest. With this, he ushered in a new chapter in music history. Which techniques does Debussy use to achieve this? What are these musical symbols? These questions will be the focus of a conversation that takes us inside Debussy’s music and the poetry he set to music. The conversation can be combined with a concert of Debussy’s songs immediately following the talk. Find tickets and more information in our calendar. About the participants Ståle Kleiberg is a central Norwegian composer with significant international recognition. His music is frequently performed both in Norway and abroad, and most of his works have been commissioned by leading orchestras, ensembles, and performers. Numerous recordings of Kleiberg’s music have been released, receiving outstanding international reviews and several Grammy nominations. Kleiberg’s music is characterized by a personal and distinctive form of extended tonality and by a meticulous approach to timbral detail. This is particularly evident in his orchestral output, which includes three symphonies, symphonic poems, and a number of solo concertos. Kleiberg is professor emeritus of musicology and composition at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. Karina Valnumsen Hansen is Senior Curator of Music at the Kode Art Museums and Composer Homes. She holds a PhD in musicology from NTNU, focusing on politics and declamation practices in W. A. Mozart’s German operas. After completing her doctorate, she served as an associate professor in musicology at NTNU before beginning a postdoctoral position at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Her research fields include music and politics, Mozart’s biography and music, 18th-century opera, Norwegian vocal music of the 19th century, and musical declamation practices in the 18th and 19th centuries. HUFF: YI YI - 10/8 KL. 19:00

A big, big film, about a few of us and all of us at the same time Yi Yi is a film about a family in Taipei. This is an oversimplification. Yi Yi is a film where old loves emerge from their hiding places while new ones flare up; where life wisdom is dispensed on a business trip funded by a failing company; where they hold grandmother's hand and talk to her in the hope that she can hear, even in her coma; where people walk to and from each other, where they live and die. This is also, of course, an oversimplification. Summarising everything that "happens" in Yi Yi is impossible, at least within the 200 words Cinemateket's programme texts are limited to. The film, directed and written by Edward Yang and described as a masterpiece already at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000, manages to be both universal and personal. He paints this Taiwanese family and all the characters they meet with a deeply humanistic eye, and you would have to be blindfolded not to see yourself in some of them. Why did I choose this film? I have been hyperbolic in all my previous programme texts, but this time I actually mean it. Yi Yi is the film we should show to aliens to convince them not to wipe us out. - Magnus O, board member of HUFF The texts for the films shown in the theme series HUFF are written by the young curators who make up the board of HUFF. • In pullman

  • In auto
