Cosa sono i fiordi e come si sono formati?
Un fiordo è una insenatura del mare, solitamente stretta e lunga, circondata da ripide pareti rocciose o alte montagne. I fiordi in genere hanno valli a forma di U e possono essere molto profondi, anche se spesso sono più bassi all’imboccatura, dove il fiordo incontra il mare. Un fiordo può avere numerose ramificazioni, o bracci. Alcuni dei fiordi più famosi della Norvegia sono in effetti dei bracci laterali!
I fiordi furono creati dall’erosione degli enormi ghiacciai che si estendevano sotto il livello del mare. Nel corso di due milioni e mezzo di anni, durante una successione di ere glaciali, vennero scavate nel suolo le valli a forma di U poi inondate dalle acque marine. In altre parole, i fiordi furono formati dai ghiacciai.
Lo sapevi che: la parola fiordo deriva dall’antico nordico fjorðr, che significa andare, passare o attraversare.
Quanto sono profondi i fiordi?
I fiordi possono essere piuttosto profondi, ma è molto variabile. Il fiordo più profondo della Norvegia è il Sognefjord, nella Norvegia dei fiordi, con una profondità di 1.303 metri.
Quanto sono lunghi i fiordi?
Anche la lunghezza dei fiordi varia parecchio. Oltre a essere il fiordo più profondo della Norvegia, il Sognefjord è anche il suo fiordo più lungo. Si estende per 205 chilometri da Solund, a ovest, fino a Skjolden, ai piedi dei parchi nazionali di Jotunheimen, Jostedalsbreen e Breheimen.
L’Hardangerfjord, nella regione di Hardanger, è il secondo fiordo per lunghezza, con i suoi 180 chilometri.

Con oltre 1.000 fiordi la frastagliata costa norvegese è una delle zone al mondo dove ce ne sono di più.

Infatti il Geirangerfjord e il Nærøyfjord, nella Norvegia dei fiordi, sono entrambi siti UNESCO. I fiordi sono gli unici siti UNESCO in Norvegia valutati unicamente sulla base di criteri naturali. Questi due fiordi sono messi in evidenza come ottimi esempi del paesaggio unico dei fiordi e sono descritti dall’organizzazione come caratterizzati da “eccezionale bellezza naturale”.

Quand’è il periodo migliore per visitare fiordi?
La maggior parte dei fiordi sono accessibili tutto l’anno, anche in inverno! Grazie al calore della Corrente del Golfo e dell’aria per via dell’effetto Coriolis, i fiordi norvegesi godono di un clima relativamente mite e non ghiacciano quasi mai.

Inverno, novembre-marzo: affascinanti paesaggi innevati e atmosfera tranquilla; straordinarie crociere invernali sui fiordi; alcune attività e pernottamenti potrebbero essere chiusi, da controllare prima.
Posso arrivare nei fiordi in treno, pullman o nave?
È possibile raggiungere tanti fiordi norvegesi con i mezzi di trasporto pubblici, comodi e sicuri. I pullman e i traghetti locali (o la combinazione di entrambi) sono spesso un ottimo modo per spostarsi. Puoi anche prendere il treno fino a eccellenti punti di partenza. Posso viaggiare nei fiordi in auto?
Puoi arrivare nei fiordi anche in auto ed esplorarli per conto tuo. Tieni presente che le strade regionali nelle zone più remote possono essere strette e tortuose, quindi guida con prudenza, specialmente se viaggi in camper o roulotte. Ricorda di pianificare prima e non sottostimare le distanze e i tempi di percorrenza in Norvegia.
Nota che alcune strade, inclusi dei passi montani, che portano ai fiordi possono venire chiuse in inverno in caso di cattivo tempo, quindi ricorda di controllare sempre il tuo itinerario prima di partire.
Come raggiungere i fiordi da Oslo, Bergen e altre città
Città come Oslo, Bergen, Ålesund e Stavanger sono fantastiche porte d’accesso ai fiordi.
