Secondo il World Waterfall Database 10 tra le prime 30 cascate più alte del mondo si trovano in Norvegia. Molte si tuffano dalle montagne nei fiordi mentre altre si sono formate lungo il corso dei fiumi, ma tutte costituiscono una parte integrante del multiforme paesaggio norvegese.

Molte delle cascate più spettacolari si possono vedere nella Norvegia sud-occidentale e il momento ideale per ammirarle è a maggio e giugno, quando iniziano a sciogliersi il ghiaccio e la neve delle montagne e la portata d’acqua è al suo massimo.

Vettisfossen, con il suo salto unico di 275 metri, è la più alta cascata naturale a caduta libera e a salto unico della Norvegia. È stata anche eletta nel 2014 più bella cascata della Norvegia dai lettori del quotidiano norvegese Dagbladet.

Langfoss è un altro spettacolo imperdibile, con le sue acque che precipitano per 600 metri dalla montagna dentro l'Åkrafjord. Le cascate più alte in Norvegia superano gli 800 metri.

Altre cascate che meritano una visita sono Vøringsfossen nella valle Måbødalen e Le Sette Sorelle (“De syv søstre”) a Geiranger - così chiamate perché ricordano i capelli di sette donne. L’imponente Kjosfossen è una delle molte attrazioni lungo la Ferrovia di Flåm dove in estate, durante la principale stagione turistica, attrici che impersonano le creature mitologiche Huldra danzano e cantano vicino alla cascata.

Per i norvegesi le cascate rappresentano molto più che un bel soggetto da fotografare. La maggior parte delle cascate nel paese vengono utilizzate, talvolta in modo controverso, per la produzione idroelettrica e forniscono energia alle industrie locali.
