Le Vesterålen sono collegate alla terraferma e alla E6 con autostrade a due corsie. Diversi ponti e gallerie collegano tutte le isole dell'arcipelago delle Vesterålen.
Fa' attenzione alle consuetudini del traffico in Norvegia per cui i pedoni attraversano la strada senza prestare molta attenzione, aspettandosi che le auto rallentino o si fermino. Anche molti ciclisti violano le normali regole della circolazione.
Ci sono autobus giornalieri da grandi città della Norvegia del Nord per Sortland, la più grande città delle Vesterålen.

Sia sulla sua rotta verso nord che verso sud, Hurtigruten fa scalo tutti i giorni a Risøyhamn, Sortland e Stokmarknes nel Vesterålen.
C'è un servizio di traghetti tutto l'anno tra Lødingen e Bognes, e tra Melbu e Fiskebøl. In estate, c'è anche un traghetto fra Andesnes e Gryllefjord.
Per viaggiare nelle Lofoten, ci sono collegamenti in traghetto da Melbu e Digermulen.
