La Strada turistica nazionale Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, una delle 18 Strade turistiche nazionali in Norvegia, è il percorso storico per superare il passo montano di Strynefjellet tra Lom e Stryn.

Sull’antica strada

Questa strada è quasi un museo, che ti permette di ammirare il progetto di ingegneria che ha resistito per secoli alle intemperie. Per non parlare dei bellissimi paesaggi di montagna che la circondano. La Strada turistica nazionale Gamle Strynefjellsvegen è lunga 27 chilometri e si snoda tra Grotli e Videsæter.

Era la vecchia strada principale che correva tra Lom nella Ottadalen e Stryn, collegando l’entroterra a est con il Nordfjord a ovest.

Per raggiungere questa strada devi viaggiare in auto per circa sei ore da Oslo, Bergen o Trondheim, oppure per circa tre ore da Ålesund.

Se percorri la strada panoramica partendo da est, il posto ideale dove fermarti a dormire e da vedere prima di partire è il grazioso villaggio montano di Lom.

Il panificio Bakeriet i Lom è una sosta imperdibile quando si è qui in zona, ma preparati ad aspettare in coda!

Dirigiti poi verso l’inizio dell’itinerario, a Grotli, dove puoi pernottare o gustare un buon pasto presso il Grotli Høyfjellshotell. Lì vicino troverai dei pannelli informativi (nella foto) con notizie sulla vecchia strada.

Segui la strada, stretta e incantevole, per circa quattro chilometri fino ad arrivare al lago Heillstuguvatnet. È un luogo splendido da fotografare, un ottimo punto di partenza per diverse escursioni a piedi, o un posto dove andare a pesca.

Lì vicino c’è anche il rottame di un aereo che venne abbattuto durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, a cui puoi dare un’occhiata, e un memoriale.

La strada è conosciuta per i suoi muretti costruiti a mano e le file di cippi di pietra. Una crescita del turismo nei fiordi occidentali fu la spinta a costruirla verso la fine del XIX secolo. Nel 2009 venne dichiarata strada protetta a causa della sua importanza storica.

Prosegui per sette chilometri accanto a torrenti e ruscelli e tra svettanti montagne fino al lago Vassvendtjønnin, il punto più alto del nostro itinerario a 1.139 metri sopra il livello del mare.

I 13 chilometri successivi ti condurranno oltre il lago Langvatnet e nella valle di Videdalen. Ammira gli splendidi paesaggi mentre inizi a scendere dall’altro lato del passo montano.

The farm and the Trollbu farm cluster are located in a quiet area at the foot of Brenndalsbreen, not far from the famous Briksdalsbreen. Several well-known destinations are within a short drive, including Olden, Loen, Hoven and Stryn. The turquoise Oldedalsvatnet is only a 5-minute drive away. At Yrineste, canoes and kayaks can be rented during the main season. Accommodation is available from May to the end of September in cabins and apartments. Booking is available via the website or Booking.com. The units are located in cabins and two restored 17th and 18th century houses, part of the Trollbu farm cluster. In total, the cluster includes three houses: two cabins and one building with two apartments (first and second floor). The total capacity is 22 beds. All units are equipped with kitchen or kitchenette, living room, sofa, TV, seating area, and WC/shower. Extra beds are available on request. One cabin (Voljastova no. 2) includes a wood-burning stove. All bathrooms were renovated in winter 2023. The area is peaceful, surrounded by high mountains and green valley sides. The restaurant, located in a rebuilt barn, accommodates up to 90 guests for events, meetings and gatherings. It is built on the foundation of the original barn from 1895 and was completed in 2005. During the main season, homemade farm food, coffee, cake, ice cream, drinks and homemade beer are served. Non ci vorrà molto prima di raggiungere la cascata di Videfossen. Fermati a guardare l’acqua che si getta dalle rocce.

C’è un punto panoramico dalla cima dove sembra di stare sospesi sopra l’acqua. Fai una sosta per fotografare o semplicemente stupirti alla vista delle forze della natura. Se vuoi fermarti più a lungo nella zona prenota una o due notti al Videseter Hotel, dall’altra parte della strada.

Continua a scendere per la sinuosa strada di montagna per circa due chilometri fino a un’altra cascata. L’imponente cascata di Øvstefossen si getta nella valle di Hjelledalen e c’è un sentiero di 200 metri con la ringhiera in acciaio che ti permette di avvicinarti in sicurezza alle acque spumeggianti.

A questo punto avresti tecnicamente completato l’itinerario della Strada turistica, ma in effetti la vecchia strada continua per altri undici chilometri fino a scendere al villaggio di Hjelle.

Lungo il tragitto superi il ponte Jøl, del 1883. Il vecchio ponte di pietra non viene più utilizzato, ma puoi fermarti a fare foto e osservare un altro pezzo di storia.

Tra le prime cose che vedrai a Hjelle ci sono lo Hjelle Hotel e Gamlebutikken, un negozio e caffè storico. Fermati per il loro delizioso tè del pomeriggio o dai un’occhiata alle mensole piene di porcellane inglesi. Questo è anche il punto di partenza se vuoi guidare lungo la Strada turistica nella direzione opposta; quindi qui troverai informazioni sull’itinerario.

Hjelle è un incantevole villaggio sulle rive del lago Strynsvatnet. Ti sembrerà di essere entrato in un paesaggio da cartolina, un luogo ideale dove trascorrere qualche giorno per andare alla scoperta della natura norvegese.

Da Hjelle puoi guidare per circa 26 chilometri fino a Stryn, un altro luogo fantastico per le tue avventure. Scia tutto l’anno sulle montagne circostanti, fai un’escursione guidata a piedi su un ghiacciaio o un tuffo rinfrescante nelle acque turchesi del lago Lovatnet (nella foto).

Nella vicina Loen puoi salire con la funivia Loen Skylift sulla cima del monte Hoven, o provare il percorso più avventuroso della via ferrata. Concediti un buon pasto preparato con materie prime locali allo Hoven Restaurant, proprio sulla vetta della montagna.

Buono a sapersi prima di partire

La strada in alcuni tratti diventa molto stretta e ci sono diversi tornanti, quindi fai attenzione al traffico proveniente in senso opposto. Ai veicoli con una lunghezza superiore agli otto metri e un carico per asse maggiore di otto tonnellate non è consentito viaggiare su questa strada.

Guida lentamente sulla vecchia strada sterrata e usa le piazzole per lasciar passare il traffico in senso opposto.

La strada è chiusa durante i mesi invernali, circa da settembre/ottobre a maggio/giugno, e può venire chiusa in altri periodi dell’anno per altri motivi, come per tempo brutto.

Informazioni per ciclisti: il punto di partenza migliore è Grotli ed è un itinerario abbastanza breve che si snoda su strade asfaltate e sterrate.
