Questo viaggio di 108 chilometri parte dallo storico villaggio di montagna di Lom, supera il passo più alto dell’Europa settentrionale, scende verso le acque smeraldine del Lusterfjord e termina nel villaggio di Gaupne, a Luster, la parte più interna del famoso Sognefjord.

Metti in conto 2 ore e un quarto come tempo totale di guida, ma programma alcuni giorni se vuoi vivere l’esperienza di ghiacciai, fiordi e cultura alpina lungo il percorso.

Se arrivi in auto da Oslo ci vogliono circa 5 ore per raggiungere Lom. In alternativa puoi guidare da Bergen fino all’altro punto di partenza a Luster, che richiede di solito 4 ore e mezza.

Tieni presente che il passo montano tra Rustasætre e Turtagrø è chiuso durante l’inverno e riapre solitamente tra metà aprile e inizio maggio. Anche dopo la riapertura la strada potrebbe venire chiusa di notte o con tempo brutto. Possono esserci neve e ghiaccio perfino in estate.

Juvasshytta in Jotunheimen

Comincia seguendo la strada in direzione sudovest per 25 minuti, poi raggiungerai l’Elveseter Hotell, una fattoria di famiglia trasformata in un artistico rifugio di montagna. Fermati a vedere la Colonna delle saghe, alta 34 metri, che illustra scene storiche del lungo e interessante passato della Norvegia.

Appena prima di arrivare a Elveseter fai una ripida deviazione per salire a Juvasshytta: è la base per le escursioni a piedi alla vetta di Galdhøpiggen (2.469 metri), la cima montuosa più alta dell’Europa settentrionale!

Ora torniamo di nuovo sulla Strada turistica!

Proseguendo da Elveseter, l’area di sosta di Liasanden ti aspetta poco oltre lungo la strada, nel caso tu voglia trascorrere un po’ di tempo ascoltando il vento frusciare tra i pini.

Mentre le vette torreggianti come Store Skagastølstind sono una calamita per gli scalatori professionisti, tu puoi ammirare la vista mozzafiato dalla sicurezza del punto panoramico di Vegaskjelet, poco oltre lungo l’itinerario!

Continua sulla strada di montagna per altri 25 minuti fino a che raggiungerai la cima a Sognefjellshytta. Questo moderno rifugio presenta un design in legno e vetro da cui puoi osservare chi fa sci di fondo allenarsi sulla neve del ghiacciaio durante i mesi estivi.

Se sei a caccia di una bella foto, il punto panoramico di Mefjellet si trova ad appena altri tre minuti lungo la strada! Qui troverai l’iconica scultura in pietra che fa da enorme cornice naturale al paesaggio.

Poi un’altra sosta veloce a Oscarshaug per utilizzare le speciali toilette progettate da Snøhetta, la stessa azienda che ha realizzato l’Opera di Oslo. Pochi minuti dopo, scendendo lungo la strada, Nedre Oscarshaug offre uno dei panorami più belli nello Jotunheimen.

E ora inizia la discesa verso il rifugio di montagna di Turtagrø. Quest’area è la culla storica dell’arrampicata alpina in Norvegia e la principale via di accesso alla frastagliata catena di Hurrungane. Un bel posto dove fermarsi a dormire o gustare dei sostanziosi piatti di montagna!

Altri 20 minuti al volante ti portano a Skjolden, nel punto più interno del Sognefjord. Partecipa ad attività uniche come il trekking con gli alpaca, tour in RIB ad alta velocità e tranquille escursioni a piedi nella rigogliosa valle di Mørkridsdalen.

Procedi seguendo il Lustrafjord per altri 15 minuti e potrai ricaricarti con i deliziosi prodotti della panetteria Lustrabui, oppure goderti un soggiorno lussuoso in uno degli incantevoli posti dove dormire nella zona, come l’insolito e bellissimo Bestebakken boutique hotel.

Dopo altri 20 minuti arriverai a Gaupne, la fine della Strada turistica nazionale di Sognefjellet. Da lì fai una deviazione risalendo la valle di Jostedalen per vedere il ghiacciaio di Nigardsbreen o provare attività adrenaliniche come il rafting e la zip line con Icetroll (anche combinati insieme!). E ricorda che il tuo viaggio non deve necessariamente concludersi qui…

    The starting point is the car park in Engjadalen. The first stretch follows a track on the west side of the river along the valley. After a short walk you come to a marked path which leads to the Tourist Association (DNT) cabin at Navarsete. The path continues along the west side of the river until it crosses the river just before Heggdalen, an nice summer farm up the green and fertile Engjadalen valley. From Heggdalen the climb is fairly steep up to Heggdalsvatnet lake where the path occasionally goes right to the edge of the river cutting. It is as well to warn you to avoid this stretch, especially when it's raining or there is slippery ice. You can leave the path and find a way a few metres further from the cliff

Continua a guidare verso sud ovest ancora per 20 minuti e raggiungerai l’idilliaco villaggio di Solvorn. Da qui puoi prendere il piccolo traghetto per la chiesa di legno di Urnes, la più antica stavkirke al mondo, o fare l’escursione a piedi a Molden per quello che molti definiscono il più bel panorama sul fiordo di Sogn.

Un tragitto di mezz’ora in direzione ovest da Gaupne ti porta al centro regionale di Sogndal. Questa vivace cittadina è il posto perfetto per trovare un birrificio locale o un moderno caffè dove fermarti a ripensare al tuo viaggio attraverso i monti Sognefjellet.

Buono a sapersi prima di partire

Chiusure invernali e riaperture primaverili

La parte di tragitto in alta montagna tra Rustasætre/Vegaskjelet e Turtagrø chiude per l’inverno a novembre e riapre di solito attorno alla metà di aprile e l’inizio di maggio. In caso di brutto tempo ci possono essere chiusure notturne o improvvise, quindi controlla sempre su Statens Vegvesen per gli aggiornamenti in tempo reale sul traffico prima di partire.

Consigli per ciclisti

Parte dalla Strada ciclabile nazionale 6, Sognefjellet è mozzafiato, ma può essere impegnativo. Partire da Skjolden/Fortun a ovest significa salire per un dislivello di 850 metri in appena 10 chilometri, con pendenze ripide che raggiungono il 16% per salire a Turtagrø. Partire da Lom permette una salita più dolce, ma ti premia con una discesa tecnica molto ripida fino a Fortun.

Servizi per camper

Le toilette delle aree di sosta dal design architettonico lungo l’itinerario non sono attrezzate per gestire i rifiuti di camper e caravan. Non è permesso svuotare il WC chimico del tuo veicolo in queste aree di sosta. Chi viaggia in camper deve invece utilizzare le apposite stazioni di Lom, Vågåmo o Gaupne.
