Quando quello spettacolo appare ad illuminare il cielo è un momento sicuramente da immortalare. Il ventisettenne fotografo Christian Hoiberg ha molta esperienza nel fissare in immagini la bellezza fugace dell’aurora.
“Fotografare l’aurora boreale non è poi così difficile se hai una conoscenza di base della tua macchina fotografica. La parte più complessa in effetti è trovare l’aurora, quella può diventare la sfida”, dice Christian.
Ecco la sua guida per principianti per fotografare l’aurora boreale.
1. Allontanati dalle luci
No, non le luci dell’aurora, ma le luci delle città. Se stai troppo vicino le tue foto saranno meno belle. Trova un buon posto lontano dal centro città. Le tue possibilità di fare lo scatto perfetto instagrammabile aumentano considerevolmente se segui una guida locale per l’avvistamento dell’aurora boreale, che conosce i posti migliori. In ogni caso, non usare mai il flash per le tue foto.
2. Fai attenzione alle previsioni

3. Ti trovi nell’Artico – indossa abiti caldi
L’inverno nella Norvegia settentrionale è freddo. Mani che tremano e dita gelate non sono d’aiuto se vuoi fare delle belle foto, quindi copriti con un abbigliamento a molti strati. Non importa se assomigli all’omino Michelin – sarà comunque l’aurora boreale la star delle tue immagini.
Pss! Se vieni in autunno potresti trovare temperature un po’ più gradevoli!
4. Tieni ferma la fotocamera
Puoi sostenere che le immagini sfocate sono artistiche, ma non penso sia quello il risultato che vorresti. Usa un treppiede e le tue foto non sembreranno fatte da qualcuno che ha bevuto una birra di troppo. Se non hai un cavalletto trova una roccia, il cofano di un’auto o qualcos’altro per tenere ferma la fotocamera. Può essere utile anche un telecomando a distanza o con il cavo.
5. Usa le impostazioni manuali se le hai
Certamente le impostazioni automatiche ti semplificano la vita, ma non aiutano quando è buio. Nella peggiore delle ipotesi l’aurora non si vedrà per niente nelle foto!
Le impostazioni giuste per fotografare l’aurora boreale sono diverse a seconda di ora e luogo, e per ogni fotocamera. Comunque le impostazioni manuali sono sempre la scelta migliore. Ti permettono di regolare messa a fuoco, tempo di esposizione, ISO e apertura. Un consiglio importante è di fare pratica con le impostazioni delle tua macchina fotografica prima del viaggio, se vuoi aumentare le probabilità di fare lo scatto perfetto all’aurora. 6. Come fotografare l’aurora boreale con lo smartphone
I moderni cellulari iPhones e Android possono fare foto all’aurora boreale sorprendentemente belle utilizzando la modalità notturna o le impostazioni manuali. Regola l’esposizione e l’ISO per far entrare più luce. Tieni fermo il telefono su un treppiede o una superficie solida per evitare immagini sfocate. Per avere risultati migliori disattiva il flash ed evita di usare lo zoom digitale.
Ricorda di portare un power bank! Le batterie si scaricano molto più velocemente con il freddo. Per risparmiare energia è anche utile chiudere tutte le altre app e tenere il cellulare in tasca così resta al caldo mentre non lo usi.
Se il tuo telefono lo consente, scattare le foto in formato RAW ti darà maggiore flessibilità quando farai dopo l’editing delle immagini.

La natura ti fornisce le luci, tu hai la fotocamera, quindi è tempo di passare all’azione. I periodi e i posti migliori per ammirare le magiche luci sono a nord del Circolo polare artico, in tardo autunno e inverno, fino all’inizio della primavera (da settembre a fine marzo).

Cattura le luci della notte polare
Nella parte più settentrionale della Norvegia la notte polare è caratteristica dei mesi invernali. La separazione tra il giorno e la notte si fa confusa dato che possono passare settimane senza che il sole salga sopra l’orizzonte. Ma notte polare non significa che non vedrai neanche un bagliore di luce durante il giorno. A meno che tu non vada alle isole Svalbard, cioè dove è completamente buio per alcune settimane a metà dell’inverno. Nelle zone più settentrionali sulla terraferma si tratta invece di un diverso tipo di luce. Nelle giornate serene puoi vedere i meravigliosi colori del tramonto verso sud e una tonalità di blu profondo verso nord.
Durante “l’ora blu” del crepuscolo, il paesaggio è ricoperto da quello che sembra un sottile velo blu. Può in effetti durare per più di un’ora e dà una strana sensazione. Fa buio, ma non completamente. Fa freddo, ma le luci calde che provengono dalle case rendono tutto tiepido e accogliente. Decisamente da catturare con la macchina fotografica!
