What does it mean to create, to bring something new into being, and what can creativity tell us about the mind? When we draw on the depths of consciousness, or of the unconscious, to make something that did not exist before, what is really happening? Is human creativity at bottom the same kind of process as the processing of information in computers and AI? Or does it belong to a different sphere altogether, one our culture may need to rediscover? Oxford philosopher Victoria Trumbull, author of the book On the Memory of the Soul. Augustine and Bergson's Metaphysics, will join PhD candidate at the University of Bergen Eirik Fevang in a conversation to explore these questions and to shed some light on the mystery of mind and creation. Farsund08.12.2026Folk & Lister: Farsund During the War – Through German Cameras
What did Farsund look like during the Second World War? Leif-Tore Hellang has assembled an extensive collection of historical photographs, and this evening he will share images of Farsund during the war years – many taken by German soldiers stationed here. What did Farsund look like under occupation – through the eyes of the soldiers who were here? On Tuesday, 8 December, Leif-Tore Hellang joins Folk & Lister with a selection of photographs from Farsund during the Second World War. Most were taken by German soldiers, offering a distinctive visual insight into the town and everyday life during the war years. Over many years, Hellang has collected photographs and other material from the Second World War in the Lister region. This evening, he will present images of Farsund itself and talk about the period, the places and the people pictured. Where the background to the photographs is known, he will also share the stories behind them. His interest in wartime history has led Hellang to undertake extensive work collecting and sharing local traces of the occupation years. He now heads Festung Lista Hangarmuseum and has previously given numerous illustrated talks about the war years in Lista and Farsund. This time, the focus is on Farsund – documented in photographs taken more than 80 years ago.

Rory Finnin is a leading researcher and communicator in Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar literature and is a professor at the University of Cambridge. He has written the book Blood of Others: Stalin's Crimean Atrocity and the Poetics of Solidarity (2022) about the genocide of the Crimean Tatars, Crimea's indigenous people, in 1944 and how literature – Crimean Tatar, Ukrainian and Turkish – helps to build solidarity and understanding of this trauma. Now Finnin is in the spotlight again with a groundbreaking monograph about Ukraine's national poet, Taras Shevchenko (1814–61), Freedom's Liberator: Taras Shevchenko and the Making of Modern Ukraine (2026). In collaboration with the Department of Foreign Languages (UiB) and the project UA-FLEX, Litteraturhusets Ukraina-serie invites you to a conversation with Rory Finnin. The conversation will be led by Ingunn Lunde, professor at the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen. The conversation will be in English. Farsund27.10.2026Folk & Lister: The Migration Period in Agder and the Snartemo Chieftains
Richly furnished graves, magnificent weapons and traces of people who lived in Agder around 1,500 years ago. Samuel Høiland from Tingvatn Archaeological Park takes us back to the Migration Period, exploring some of the most remarkable finds from both Snartemo and Lista. A belt of rich archaeological finds from the Migration Period, spanning approximately AD 375–550, runs through Agder's inland valleys. The best known is the Snartemo find from Hægebostad, where Grave V contained the famous Snartemo sword among its treasures. But Snartemo is far from the only place where significant discoveries from this period have been made. Richly furnished graves have also been found in the Lista area, including at Lunde and Sande in Herad. What do these graves and objects tell us about the people who lived here? Who were the powerful individuals buried with costly weapons and other possessions – and what characterised the Migration Period in Agder? These are among the questions Samuel Høiland will explore during the evening. A trained historian based at Tingvatn Archaeological Park, part of Vest-Agder Museum, he is the project manager for "A Future for the Past – the Migration Period in Lister". The project is a cultural tourism initiative bringing together Agder County Council, municipalities in the region and Vest-Agder Museum.

Henrikke Meidell hereby opens registration for the Vestland semi-final in slam poetry, to be held on Saturday, January 23. Anyone can try their hand here — experienced performers with an illegal number of poems under their belt, or aspiring poets who have just discovered the art form. On the slam stage, it's all about expressing your own truth, as explosively, rawly, or dreamily as you wish. Slam poetry lies at the intersection of performance, rap, and spoken word; here, what you say counts just as much as how you say it. Sharpen your tongue. Unfold the snail in your ear. Let the spit fly. During the Vestland semi-final, participants perform their own texts in Norwegian or English in oral form, but it is also perfectly fine to bring the written text or a cheat sheet up onto the stage. The audience is an active participant in the competition and helps to decide who wins. The winner goes on to the Norwegian Slam Poetry Championship, which will be held during LitFestBergen on Saturday, February 13th. In connection with our series this autumn «Ukraina på Litteraturhuset» we have invited the Ukrainian author Sofija Andukhovych (b. 1982). Andukhovych lives in Kyiv and has published a number of books before the major work on Ukraine's history, Amadoka I. The novel, about Romana and Uljana, was published in Ukraine in 2020. The novel was translated into Norwegian in 2025, and in 2026 the follow-up, Amadouka II. Sofija, was published in Norwegian. Through gripping human destinies the two novels tell Ukraine's history, of struggle, suffering and loss. In this way they combine family history with Ukraine's history in the 20th century and up to the beginning of Russia's war in eastern Ukraine in 2014. Since the outbreak of war in 2022 Andukhovych has regularly been interviewed in connection with the situation in her homeland. Meet her in conversation with Ingunn Lunde, professor at the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen. The conversation will be in English. The workshop invites participants to examine the pressure, necessity or drive that underlies their own writing. What is your «despite»? Where do you write from? Through conversations, writing exercises and shared reading the workshop seeks to locate this place and develop texts that carry its power. Together the participants and Taha will read plays that grapple with political and ethical questions, among them VILLA by Guillermo Calderón, HE BROUGHT HER HEART BACK IN A BOX by Adrienne Kennedy and FAR AWAY by Caryl Churchill. Dalia Taha (b. 1986) is a poet and playwright. She has published three poetry collections in Arabic, among them ENTER WORLD (2025) which was recently published in English by Graywolf Press in translation by Sara Elkamel. Taha's dramatic works have been performed at among others the Royal Court Theatre in London and the Royal Flemish Theatre in Brussels. Among her best known plays are FIREWORKS (2015), KEFFIYEH / MADE IN CHINA (2012), THERE IS NO ONE BETWEEN YOU AND ME (2016) and HUNGER: A MUSICAL (2018). Taha holds an MFA in playwriting from Brown University and has received the Solidarity Prize from Norsk Dramatikerforbund and the Banipal Visiting Writer Fellowship. She teaches at Birzeit University and lives in Ramallah, Palestine. The workshop is open to writers from various parts of the performing arts, literature and art fields. The workshop is held in English and is organised by Cornerstone in collaboration with Tekstallianse. The masterclass is limited to 20 places. First come first served!
