Dødssvingen – The Deadly Bend: Myth or Reality?
The name Dødssvingen has been part of local folklore for decades and has appeared in numerous accounts over the years.
Here is an example from Stavanger Aftenblad, dated 17 June 1929:
“Drivers cannot be warned strongly enough against careless driving on this bend, which is no longer known locally as Joa Bend, but as ‘the Deadly Bend’. Not because the bend itself is dangerous, but because careless driving makes it so.”
Another report, dated 5 July 1954, stated:
“The police were called out and found the vehicle. A small lorry in the Deadly Bend.”
So, is the story of Dødssvingen a myth or a fact? It is, in fact, based on a real event that occurred very early in the history of motoring, on 12 May 1917.
This is what Stavanger Aftenblad reported:
“Shocking motoring accident yesterday on the Håland road. Car carrying 10 people crashes into the rock face at Joabakken at tremendous speed. Two killed and six seriously injured.”
The story of Dødssvingen will be told by Tor Erik Hansen during this evening's event.
