Il faro di Lindesnes fu costruito nel 1655 sulla penisola omonima, nel punto più a sud di tutta la Norvegia continentale. Era il primo di oltre 200 fari che per secoli hanno fatto da guida a navi e vascelli. Molti sono stati chiusi o automatizzati di recente; l’ultimo faro funzionante gestito con personale statale venne chiuso nel 2006.

Grazie alla loro posizione idilliaca e drammatica, affacciati sul mare, questi luoghi iconici abbandonati di recente sono diventati sempre più popolari come destinazione di vacanza. Molti viaggiatori oggi sono in cerca di esperienze uniche. Passare la notte in un faro ti farà avvicinare alla storia della Norvegia, nazione di marinai e naviganti, mentre ascolti le onde che si infrangono sugli scogli. Oltretutto queste costruzioni sono belle da fotografare e sono un soggetto perfetto da condividere con famigliari, amici, e con tutto il mondo.

In tutto sono circa 60 i fari norvegesi che si possono affittare per il pernottamento. Le tariffe sono di diverse fasce di prezzo. Lo stato è ancora proprietario della maggior parte dei fari, e collabora con le associazioni e le organizzazioni locali per tenerli aperti per visite, tour e pernottamento. Altri sono proprietà di privati, che li gestiscono commercialmente.
