Sentralstasjonen in Rio de Janeiro holds a multitude of fates on their way to, from or through the city. Here is the story of one of these. The moving breakthrough film by the director behind The Motorcycle Diaries (2004). In the sea of people at Rio de Janeiro's central station two people meet, an older retired teacher who makes a living helping people and a 9 year old boy who has not seen his father in many years. Together they set out on a road trip to find the father, and a unique friendship develops along the way.

The film won both the Oscar for Best Foreign Film and the Golden Bear in Berlin in 1998. Central Station represents the new wave of Brazilian films at the end of the 90s, and is often described as a continuation of the social realist legacy in Brazilian film. It also achieved something the golden age Cinema Novo films of the 60s never did: reaching a wide audience both nationally and internationally.
