During the winter, pianist Kjetil Mulelid, saxophonist Kika Sprangers, bassist Mats Eilertsen, and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen gathered in the latter’s home surroundings in Lommedalen. Everyone brought some songs and ideas, then pressed record and let the interplay take shape. It turned out to be a beautiful first meeting, which developed into the recording of the album.
Sprangers’ lyrical intensity and Mulelid’s melodic vision find solid grounding in Eilertsen’s rich tone and Johansen’s always creative drumming. The result is a collection of melodic pieces, shaped by spontaneity, curiosity, and an unmistakable Nordic clarity.
Following the release, the album has received widespread acclaim. Dag og Tid described it as “balm for the soul,” while leading media outlets such as Jazzwise and Jazz’Halo highlighted it as one of the best jazz albums of the summer.
This supergroup began as a spontaneous encounter, but the musical collaboration continues to evolve. The journey now continues on stage, and Beiggja is soon ready for its first encounter with the audience in Stavanger.
