The trip to Røysåsen starts by the town church. In the roundabout by Amfi Moss shopping centre you will continue in the direction towards Henrich Gerners str and Møllebyen until you reach the waterfall which is a very recognizable landmark in our town.
Along this route so far you will pass Gallery Gerner, the city and industrial museum, our library and cinema. The waterfall (dubbed "Mossefossen") laid the foundation to the city's industrial growth which has all up to recent history been quite substantial. The industrial basin included grindmills, sawmills, ironworks, paper manufactory, breweries, distilleries, textile industries, trade, shipyards and shipping. This has lead the way for new human settlements and immigration and the city being the focus of trade.
The old "Kings highway" went by Storebro. Today's Storebro and Lillebro in stone was built in 1837. In the conventionhall, which lies just a stone's throw away from the river outlet the "Moss convention" was signed 14. august 1814 which secured peace with Sweden and an agreement to form a common union. The union itself expired in 1905 when Norway granted itself its independence.
The trip continues past the old workers quarters in Verket. Continue in Røysstr. towards Røysåsen/Røyshill where you will enter a path that leads you up the hill. Some places are marked rather spartial that guides you over the hill. On the top you will be rewarded with a clear view of the city, Oslofjord and Jeløy peninsula.
On the hill you will also find ancient tombs from the bronzeage, with a view to all sides.
Down from the top you will follow a path to the southend of Molbekk pond / Molbekktjernet which has been artificialy dammed. The path passes along the old "iceslide" which where used to ferry iceblocks from the pond down to the sea. The pond was used in its time to cut ice, and it was a source of export to England. Later the pond was converted to a drinking source for the inhabitants in Kambo.
From the pons, the trail goes towards Gamleveien "Oldway" and Røysåsen. Through Molbekk follows the old "Fredrikhaldske kingsroad" which stretch to our capitol of Christiania (today's Oslo) all the way to Halden past Moss. The kingsway was originaly a road used for horse carriages when King Fredrik the 4th made his visit to our city in 1704.
