The Rising Tide by Jason DeCaires Taylor

The Rising Tide changes with the tide and is a beautiful sight in Kvalsvik. The four sculptures allude to the retired work horses while drawing attention to our continuous dependence on fossil fuels and the apocalyptic climate change they potentially represent. The questions they address are: Who is responsible, and where are we headed?

You can park in Kvalsvik, which is the closest car park to The Rising Tide. It takes around 5-10 minutes to get to the sculptures. If you want to take a longer walk, there is also parking at Haraldshaugen. From there, it takes about 30 minutes to walk to the sculptures.

There are public toilets at Kvalsvik Badeplass. You can also use the toilets at Haraldshaugen Camping, which is about 30 minutes from the sculptures.

Take bus 201 from Strandgata terminal or Bytunet in Haugesund to Bleikemyr. Get off at Gard. From the bus stop, walk along the coastal path to The Rising Tide. Allow 40 minutes for this walk. More information about public transport in Haugesund and the surrounding area can be found here.

If you are going to walk to The Rising Tide from Haugesund town centre, you must allow at least one hour each way. Visit Haugesund Tourist Information in Haraldsgata 131 for directions and a free city map.

You can cycle to The Rising Tide. Visit Haugesund Tourist Information in Haraldsgata 131 and get help from our knowledgeable staff. If you don’t have your own bike, you can hire an electric city bike from Kolumbus. Viking Adventure also offers guided e-bike tours (must be booked in advance).

The Kiwi grocery shop at Gardsenteret (Nygårdsvegen 6) is the closest shop, and is about 30 to 40 minutes from The Rising Tide. Note that it is closed on Sundays. We recommend that you buy something to eat and drink beforehand if you are starting the walk in Haugesund town centre. Good options on the way are Lutchfood and Jåblom Bakst (both open on Sundays).
