Radaren at Kjeksa – a wartime memorial near Bud

Radaren på Kjeksa is a German surface-search radar station from the Second World War, sited on the hill of Kjeksa, about 1.5 kilometres east of the Ergan coastal fort in Bud.

The radar was originally meant to stand at the fort itself, but was moved here because it would have blocked the guns' lines of fire. On 3 March 1943, the fort's command carried out a survey together with several naval officers to find a suitable site with a clear view out to sea and an elevation of at least 40 metres above sea level. The choice fell on Kjeksa, and the radar was installed during 1943 under the command of Marineoberkommando Norwegen (the German Naval High Command Norway).

The radar was of the FuMo3 type, a surface-search radar with an output of nearly 20 kilowatts, originally mounted aboard a German naval vessel before being moved here. Power came from its own generator, housed in a small engine room next to the antenna, and a guard hut also stood on site for the crew.

Today you can still see remains of the power supply route and the barracks that once belonged to the radar station, along the path from the main road. The site offers a fine view over the surrounding area, and Norwegian Scenic Routes has built a rest area along the road, as well as paths down towards the sea. The terrain is easy to walk, and the site suits anyone wanting to combine wartime history with coastal scenery.
