Mountain hike to Uburhelleren

Uburhelleren was used as a hideout during the hostilities in April 1940 and was later adapted for future use.

The walk to Uburhelleren

The walk starts at the Jæren Friluftsråd car park, just before the old power station in Oltedal. A short distance from the car park is a shelter with barbecue facilities.

First, follow the tractor track for about 15 minutes. Clear signposting then leads the way up through the rugged terrain. The path passes through a scree slope, and steps have been built in some places. After about 30 minutes’ walk, the enormous rock comes into view.

Uburhelleren has not been precisely weighed, but it is estimated that the boulder weighs between 70 and 80 million kilos.

On the way back, you can follow the same route down to the tractor track. When you reach the flatter section, you can also take the path through the woods on the opposite side of the track. This leads over a bridge and back to the track.

Practical information

The walk follows the signposts and the marked trail. The first section goes along a tractor track, whilst the final stretch up to the rock formation goes through rough terrain and rocky ground.

Access and parking

Follow RV45 to Gjestal Spinneri and turn off towards Oltedal. Continue to the sign for the Energisenteret (Energy Centre). The car park is located approximately 200 metres before the Energy Centre.

Please be careful and respect this cultural heritage site

The walk to Uburhelleren passes through open countryside and may include steep or slippery sections. Wear shoes with good grip, follow the markings and assess the conditions as you go. Please respect the rock shelter and other cultural heritage features: do not move stones, take any objects with you or leave any marks.
