Hike to the Gursli mines and Hattesteinan

Steep start, great views

Although the first half of the hike is very steep, it is easy to walk – the mining road is in good condition for hiking. The first half hour is uphill, but you will be rewarded with beautiful views along the way. A little way up the hill, the lake of Lundevann comes into view. This lake starts in the centre of Moi and flows into the Åna Sira River, and is one of the deepest lakes in Norway.

Idyllic Gullvann

Down by Gullvann Lake, you will find pure heaven. This is a great place to take a break and enjoy nature. Fishing in Gullvann is possible, but it requires a fishing licence.

History at Gursli

At Gursli, you first come to ‘Jentehytta’, where the cooks used to work. The house has been restored and painted red, and is open to visitors. A couple of bends further up, you will find the actual site where the ore was crushed. One of the crushers still stands there – rusty and unusable, but as a reminder of times gone by. There is also a rest area with tables here.

Show caution near the mines

The mines themselves are located just past the crushing site. The area around the Gursli mines shows signs of past mining activity. Stick to the marked path and do not enter mine openings or go near unsecured shafts and steep edges. Children and dogs must be kept under close supervision. Please respect the cultural heritage sites: do not move stones, take any objects away or leave any marks. A guided tour with Magma Geopark is recommended if you wish to explore the mining area in more detail.
