Finnøy
Bandåsen is with its 513 m the highest mountain peak in the islands of Ryfylke. From Tjeltveit, the hike goes along the old road (sjoarveien) to Helgeland.
The farm courtyard at Helgeland is located 285 metres above sea level. Currently, the farm is run as a sheep farm with one family living here. From Helgeland, the track goes straight uphill. The trip is varied, and eventually you arrive at some excellent viewing points. If you are lucky, you will see wild sheep, elk and deer in the area. In the right season, you could find both blueberries and cranberries on your hike.
The tour continues until you arrive at a stone partition that "Store-Jon" put up here, probably around 1855. The stone fence is 1 metre high, and about 200-300 metres long. Parts of the fence have been repaired. Being here at Bandåsen gives the impression of being on the very roof of Ryfylke. To the west, you see the islands and Stavanger, to the east, you see the Ryfylke moors, to the north, Jelsa and Nedstrand and to the south, Hjelmeland and Fister. The return is via the same track.
Be prepared and show consideration on your walk
The walk to Bandåsen takes you through open mountain terrain and areas of active farming. Dress for the weather, wear shoes with good grip and follow the marked path. Show consideration for grazing animals, keep a safe distance and keep your dog under control. Close all gates behind you and do not disturb the animals or the work on the farms.
