Fjellstua 418 is perched at the top of Aksla, offering views of Ålesund, the Sunnmøre Alps, and the sea – an iconic eatery where food and scenery come together.

The dining spot overlooking the art nouveau town

For many, Fjellstua is the very symbol of Ålesund. Located at the summit of Mount Aksla, 418 steps above the art nouveau town, it offers spectacular panoramic views of Ålesund, the Sunnmøre Alps, the surrounding islands, and the open sea.

Founded in 1903, Fjellstua is the oldest dining establishment in the city. Over the years, the building has evolved in form, but the name and unique location have remained the same for over 120 years. Both locals and visitors are drawn here – for the view, the food, and the atmosphere.

Dining with a view

At Fjellstua 418, you’ll enjoy flavourful, traditional dishes with a focus on Norwegian ingredients and partnerships with local producers. The menu ranges from classic lunch options to seasonal dinner dishes – all best enjoyed with sweeping views over the city and fjord.

On sunny days, the outdoor terrace is ideal for a glass in the evening sun or an ice cream while gazing out over Aksla and the fjord landscape. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed – a natural stop for anyone wanting to savour the taste of Ålesund.

How to get to fjellstua and the viewpoint

Buses can’t drive all the way to the top, but for visitors on foot, the walk from the turning area offers beautiful nature and a rewarding experience in itself. You can also take the 418 steps from Byparken to reach the top.

The flag at the entrance shows whether the venue is open – if it’s raised, you’re warmly welcome inside. During private events, Fjellstua is closed to the public and the flag is taken down.

The viewpoint area is free for dining guests. For those who wish to visit the viewpoint without using the café or restaurant, an entrance fee of NOK 100 per person applies.

Event spaces, art and conferences

Fjellstua is more than just a café. It offers event and conference facilities for hire, making it a great setting for everything from meetings to celebrations. You can also enjoy rotating art exhibitions throughout the year – an extra cultural experience at the top of the city.
