Discover Mysen by bike!

Two bike routes to choose from: A family-friendly bike ride that features historical sights, farm shops, museums, and cozy cafés along the way. Choose the green-marked, traffic-safe route that follows walking and biking paths and gravel roads, or take the entire loop via the red route for a longer and more challenging ride for experienced cyclists.

Discover Mysen bike!

A bike ride featuring fortifications, Iron Age graves, farm shops, museums, and cozy cafés. Parts of the route are safe for families with children, as it follows pedestrian and bike paths or gravel roads the entire way. You can choose to cycle only on the traffic-safe bike path. It is marked in green. The section marked in red has more traffic and is best suited for experienced cyclists.

Option 1 – The Lille-Mona Loop (Traffic-Safe Route)

The route starts at the train station in Mysen. From there, cycle up Storgata and turn left onto David Blidsgate.

Villa Welhaven

Villa Welhaven is a gathering place in the heart of Mysen. The café offers a varied menu of delicious, homemade food. Here you’ll find a wide selection of fresh baked goods and cakes, straight from our own bakery. Villa Welhaven is also the Mysen hub for the Golden Line. Here you can pick up our brochure and get more information about the area. At Villa Welhaven, you can buy some treats for your trip, or take a break and enjoy the cozy atmosphere in the café with a focaccia or a delicious cake made right here. From Villa Welhaven, continue biking down David Blidsgate toward Slakteren Brewery, located on the corner of the street.

Slakteren Bryggerhus (Brewery)

Slakteren Brewery is a local beer house that features a beer shop, a homebrewing store, a brewery, and a pub. Here, you can shop for equipment for your own homebrewing setup or pick up samples from the local brewery to take home.

Høytorp fortress

Cycle down to Jernbanegata, turn right, cycle past the roundabout, and continue on Smedgaten until you reach Høgliveien. Cross the street, cycle onto Høgliveien, and turn left onto Bekkefarveien. At the end of Bekkefarveien, take the pedestrian and bike path north toward Vardeveien. Continue on Vardeveien until you reach the entrance gate to Høytorp Fort. Here, take the road leading to the fort, and you’ll soon be at the fortification area. Høytorp Fort is the largest fort in the Fossumstrøket fortification system and was completed in 1918.

The Iron Age burial mounds and the Sletner Treasure

After visiting Høytorp Fort, cycle back down the hills and turn right to continue up Vandugbakken. Turn onto Barkerudveien and continue along it. Turn right onto Ospeveien and continue until you reach Platåveien. Here, the walking and biking trail continues along Monaryggen until you reach Askimveien. Continue biking until you reach the turnoff for Edwin Ruud’s Hospital and the large Iron Age burial mounds on your right. Bike down the road and under the train bridge, then turn right toward Edwin Ruud’s Hospital, and then left down the hill to the Iron Age burial mounds. The burial mounds here are among the largest in Østfold and indicate that this was a center of power—presumably a chieftain’s seat—during the Iron Age (from ca. 500 BCE to ca. 500 CE). It’s fascinating to study the information panels about the history of the burial mound tradition in Norway, and if you’re looking for even more excitement, you can bike along the walking path around the hospital and read the information panels about the Sletner Treasure. This gold treasure was found at Sletner Farm, and on the information panel you can see pictures of the 37 gold artifacts. More information here.

Cycle out of the hospital grounds and turn left down Veslemona.

Folkenborg Museum

Continue along the road toward Veslemona, which heads south and crosses the railroad tracks. Keep cycling down the road into a large ravine, where you’ll cross the river and continue on Narvestadveien. Here you can take in a beautiful landscape featuring two large farms. At the end of the road lies the Folkenborg Museum, which has a rich history to share. This is a great spot for a break. There are tables and benches here, and it’s pleasant to eat your packed lunch among the beautiful old log buildings. The area also features a memorial stone dedicated to Håkon Håkonsson, who was born here in 1204 after his mother, Inga of Varteig, became pregnant by the Birkebeiner king Håkon Sverresson and was forced to flee from the Baglers, who ruled Østfold at the time. Inga later fled with Håkon to Nidaros, and the Birkebeiner helped her escape over the mountains. Håkon Håkonsson went on to become one of Norway’s most important kings and ensured a long period of peace in the country. For more information about Inga of Varteig. Birkelunden Iron Age Burial Ground

From the Folkenborg Museum, cycle along Småbruveien back toward Mysen. Turn left toward the fire station and take a detour to Birkelunden, where you’ll find several Iron Age burial mounds, a sunken road, a cozy rest area, and exercise equipment. Then cycle back to the intersection at the fire station and continue on to Storgata and west toward Mysen Station.

La Moss

Before your train ride home, it’s always a treat to have dinner at La Moss restaurant on David Blidsgate. Alfonso serves culinary dishes based on Italian ingredients, but also uses local products from Østfold. Enjoying a gourmet meal at La Moss will give you a fantastic end to your bike ride!

Option 2

Cycle north on Jernbanegata and turn left at the roundabout up Vandugbakken. Take the first left again onto Vandugveien, then turn left again onto Tittutveien. Follow the pedestrian and bike path that starts at the end of Tittutveien across to Lupinveien. From Lupinveien, take the pedestrian and bike path that leads to Platåveien. At the end of Platåveien, continue west along the pedestrian and bike path. Here you’ll see the majestic Monaryggen to your right, and to your left, the view over Mysen and down to the Glomma River; on days with good visibility, you can see far to the south toward Skiptvet, Rakkestad, and Sarpsborg from here. Iron Age burial mounds and the Sletner Treasure—Take the exit to the right toward Edvin Ruud’s Care Center. The burial mounds here are among the largest in Østfold and indicate that this was a center of power—presumably a chieftain’s seat—during the Iron Age (from ca. 500 BCE to ca. 500 CE). It’s fascinating to read the information panels about the history of the burial mound tradition in Norway, and if you’re looking for even more excitement, you can bike along the walking path around the hospital and read the information panels about the Sletner Treasure—the gold hoard found at Sletner Farm—and view photos of the 37 gold artifacts.
