Sandnes
Huge hiking area northeast of Sandnes with several mountains and ponds.
South of the mountain Eikelifjelet, there is a flat and accessible area of ponds and sparse pine forests, a rare sight in the region in general. A former farm at Lundekvam and the farm road to the farm Kvelvane are cultural elements giving the area historic value.
There are several possibilities for round trips in the areas east of Hommersåk. The paths go through forests and open terrain, and there are several nice viewing points, for instance, the mountains Eilifsfjell, Hommersåk, Vårlivarden, Torenipa, Bakkefjell and Storafjell. On the hiking trails, you will pass four lakes: Måketjørn, Grindavatn and the two lakes Lomstjørnene. The latter three have a history connected to the last world war. Along the hiking trail between Grindavatn and Torenipa, you will pass a rock shelter. The trails can be rocky and marshy; therefore, not suited for prams or wheelchairs. Best suited for prams is the hike to the former Maudlandsgården farm, where there is a lean-to with a barbecue area.
Transport: Take bus 21 from Sandnes bus terminal to Hogstadkrossen Nord if you are walking to Storaberget or Grindavatnet. Check current departure times in the Kolumbus journey planner.
Be prepared and show consideration
The Maudland area has both rocky and marshy sections which can become slippery after rain. Wear shoes with good grip, dress for the conditions and stick to the marked paths. Keep your distance from grazing animals, keep your dog under control and close any gates. Only light fires where and when permitted, and take care near water and bathing areas.
