Along the Jæren coast, you can follow in the footsteps of countless travellers through thousands of years of history. Traces of the prehistoric Holvegen and the historic Kongevegen from the 17th century partly follow the walking trail known today as ‘Kongevegen’.

Parts of the hike follow this road, and the road has therefore been named "Kongevegen" (the Royal road/King's road). Some of the ancient tracks are still visible. The beach zone is rich in cultural heritage, and the entire area is a protected landscape area. The hike can start and finish at different locations.

The most usual stretches are:

Hå gamle prestegard – Obrestad harbour

Obrestad harbour - Grødalandstunet

Grødalandstunet – Varhaug gamle kirkegard

Attractions along the route:

From north to south: Hå gamle prestegård (old vicarage), a large burial ground at Hå, excavated and restored, Obrestad lighthouse, Grødalandstunet with buildings from the 1700s and 1800s, coal drilling monument at Grødalandsstranden, millhouse and dry house at Bodle and Varhaug old cemetery. More burial mounds along the entire beach. Parts of the area are also plant-life protected.

How to get to Kongevegen

Take the train to Varhaug station. From there, it’s about a 30-minute walk to Varhaug Old Cemetery. You can start your walk at the cemetery.

Look after yourself and the coastal landscape

The Kongevegen runs through an open and exposed coastal landscape. Keep a safe distance from the sea in strong winds and high waves, and take care on slippery rocks. Stick to established paths, respect farmland and be considerate of birdlife. Keep your dog under control, follow local drone regulations and park only in designated areas.
