Enjoy beautiful views and a magical forest walk in Hestnes, five minutes away from Egersund centre.

The Hestnes hiking trail in Egersund offers plenty of variety on a relatively short circular hike. The landscape alternates between woodland, rocky shores and open coastline, with beautiful views of the North Sea, small islands, skerries and Viberodden lighthouse. The route is around 4.2 kilometres long and is a great choice for an easily accessible nature experience close to Egersund town centre.

Woodland, coast and worthwhile detours

The route takes you through woodland planted around a hundred years ago. In some places, the ground and tree trunks are covered in green moss, giving the forest an almost fairytale-like atmosphere. There are several worthwhile detours along the way. At Hyseberget, the landscape opens up towards the sea, with views of Viberodden lighthouse, Søre Eigerøy and the surrounding mountains.

Hyseberget also has a long history as a fishing spot. Local people once fished from the shore here, at a time when not everyone had access to boats suitable for heading out to sea.

Traces of the past

The hike also passes several sites of cultural and historical interest. One detour leads to ‘Erna’, an old gun emplacement from the Second World War. At Rosshagen, you can see the foundations of a former cabin, while swings hanging from the trees nearby make this a popular stop for children.

Continue along the old stone path beside the sound, and you will come across more traces from the war years, including the remains of a German checkpoint. There is also a sheltered spot carved into the rock, providing a natural place to stop for a break.

Be prepared for changing conditions

The Hestnes hike passes through varied terrain, including woodland, trails and sections close to the sea. Be aware that roots, rocks and rocky shores can become slippery when wet. Keep well away from the sea in strong winds and high waves, and avoid exposed rocks. Stay on established trails, choose safe places for taking photos and take all your rubbish with you.
