Per più di un secolo il porto di Aker Brygge ha ospitato i cantieri navali Akers Mekaniske Verksted. Dal 1986, all'apertura dei primi negozi nel progetto di rinnovamento della zona , l'aera è diventata un punto di ritrovo importante per la città e ospita oggi molti centri commerciali, appartamenti, uffici, ristoranti, teatri e centri fitness.

Si tratta di un vero e proprio quartiere moderno, a ridosso del fiordo di Oslo. I palazzi hanno uno stile ben definito, con un mix tra tradizione (I tipici cantieri navali di un tempo) e architettura moderna.

Nei mesi estivi Aker Brygge è il luogo di ritrovo numero uno per gli abitanti della città, sia durante il giorno che la sera, grazie ai numerosi ristoranti e locali.

Negiozi, ristoranti, appartamenti, uffici, cinema, teatri, bar e locali notturni. Questa zona ha praticamente tutto, inclusa passeggiata lungomare e un ampio parcheggio. Si tratta di una bella combinazione di architettura e panorama del fiordo di Oslo, combinazione che crea una finestra unica, una perla sul mare.
