While the world has been watching Trump, something dramatic has happened on the other side of American politics. Within the Democratic Party, a movement is growing that believes the party must become something entirely new: more populist, more working-class oriented, less woke, and more willing to break with its own elite.

Some call it economic patriotism, some call it progressive populism, and others call it “Blue MAGA.”

At the same time, a polarized political landscape is coming together in new ways. In the fight against data centers that consume water, land, and electricity from local communities, conservative farmers and urban environmental activists are demonstrating side by side. The Wall Street Journal has already given them the name “Horseshoe Party,” meaning that the far ends of the political right and left bend toward each other and meet.

Is this a short-lived alliance driven by common enemies? Or does it signal a deeper reorganization of American, and Western, politics?
