250 years of the USA: How is democracy faring?

3 novembre 19:00-19:50

Former NRK correspondents explore 250 years of US democracy, from the ideals of 1776 to today's polarisation and challenges facing democratic institutions. In Norwegian.

This year marks 250 years since the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776. The American Revolution introduced new ideals of freedom, democracy and equality, and the young republic became a model for nations seeking to free themselves from autocratic rule and colonial domination.

But how is American democracy faring today? Many believe that the United States is experiencing a period of deep polarisation and growing distrust in political institutions, while others argue that the country continues to uphold the same ideals of freedom that formed the foundation of the revolution.

Former NRK correspondents Eva Bratholm and Joar Hoel Larsen have followed American politics for several decades. Drawing on historical insight and first-hand knowledge, they look back at 250 years of American democracy and discuss how the ideals of 1776 are being challenged and interpreted in our own time.

The result is a timely and thought-provoking talk about a country that continues to shape world politics – and whose developments affect us all.
