KODE – Art Museums and Composer Homes

Experience masterpieces from Norwegian art history by Edvard Munch, Harriet Backer, Nikolai Astrup and J. C. Dahl. Four buildings, one entrance ticket.

Welcome to Norway's second largest art museum.

Four buildings, a number of exhibitions, with tours and audio guides are all included in one entrance ticket.

Experience masterpieces from Norwegian art history by Edvard Munch, Harriet Backer, Nikolai Astrup and J. C. Dahl, and experience exciting new exhibitions of contemporary art and architecture.

NB: Please note that large parts of the Munch collection in KODE 3 are currently on loan to another museum.

Permanenten

Permanenten has housed KODE's collection of handicrafts and design, and shows changing exhibitions. The building was designed by architect Henry Bucher and was completed in 1896.

The building is currently scheduled for refurbishment and will until then have selected temporary exhibitions at display.

Right now, you can experience the spectacular new installation by Børre Sæthre in Tårnsalen.

Here you will also find restaurant and bar Bien Centro, which serves Italian food.

Stenersen

Stenersen houses changing exhibitions with an emphasis on contemporary art. The building was designed by architect Sverre Lied and was completed in 1978.

The museum has between six and eight new exhibitions every year, presenting international contemporary art, exhibitions of architecture, handicraft or graphic art and exhibitions of works from our their own collections.

Rasmus Meyer

The collection after the businessman Rasmus Meyer has given its name to a small jewel of a museum. Here you will also find the world's third largest collection of Edvard Munch. (Please note that large parts of the Munch collection in KODE 3 are currently on loan to another museum.)

Over two floors, you wander through the "golden age" in Norwegian art history from 1880-1905 and onwards towards 1920. Here you will find works by artists such as J. C. Dahl, Hans Gude, Harriet Backer, Christian Krohg, Kitty Kielland, Nikolai Astrup and Erik Werenskiold, as well as the the Norwegian Matisse-students Henrik Sørensen and Jean Heiberg.

We also show historic Bergen interiors and the beautiful Blumenthal room with its full-covering ceiling and wall paintings from around 1760.

Rasmus Meyer holds permanent exhibitions and few changes are made to the selection on display. In July 2022, we opened a new presentation of the composer Ole Bull and his magnificent violins in three exhibition rooms.

Lysverket

The large museum Lysverket is undergoing rehabilitation and currently only shows changing exhibitions, in addition to the large Tower Room on the fourth floor.

Lysverket is also home to the restaurant with the same name, which has a star in the Michelin guide.
